March 2003 Artblock embarked on an eight week sculpture
project with children from three local schools; Dale Primary, Hardwick
Community Junior & Pear Tree Community Junior School. Six children
were chosen to represent each school.

| The aim of the project was to get each school to produce a life-size figurative sculpture, with each figure split into three sections or blocks; head, torso & legs, with each section being constructed, based on the work of a famous sculptor. The three sculptors chosen were Joseph Cornell, Naum Gabo & Alberto Giacometti. After an initial get together by all three schools, weekly workshops were run at each of the schools looking at the work of the three sculptors. | |||||
| The next three weeks of the project were dedicated to the construction of the finished figurative sculpture. Each school was allocated different sections to construct; for example, one school may construct a Joseph Cornell head, Alberto Giacometti body & Naum Gabo legs, with another school producing a Gabo head, a Cornell body & Giacometti legs (sounds more complicated than it actually is!!!). Each section was contained within a box, enabling the finished sections to be stacked on top of each other to produce the finished sculpture. | |||||

| The final week of the project saw the three schools & the three sculptures come together. The sections of the figure were rearranged; all the Cornell sections, all the Gabo sections and all the Giacometti sections were brought together to reveal three new sculptures. We now had an Alberto Giacometti figure, a Naum Gabo figure & a Joseph Cornell figure. | |||||
