Gifted & Talented '20 Questions' Art project - Jan - March 05

In January 2005 Artblock was commissioned to work with 18 children from 3 Derby schools (Dale Primary, Firs Estate & Pear Tree Junior), on the subject of personal identity. The 8 week project began with all 18 children spending a day at Pear Tree School. The unsuspecting children were asked 20 fairly random questions, the answers to which formed the framework for the children's work. For the next 6 weeks, Artblock visited each school independently, and worked with the children on a variety of art activities.
After looking at examples of the work of artist Barbara Kruger, the children created their own work using images & text. The children based their work on their answers to the initial 20 questions.
Over the next few weeks the children created clay relief portraits, silhouette & collage portraits, collected small objects from home, and took photographs of each other.
After looking at examples of the work of artist David Hockney, the children created their own photomontage.
On the final day all 18 children met up at Pear Tree School, where they looked at the work of assemblage artist Kurt Schwitters. Using objects, images, and text that had been collected over the course of the project, the children assembled their finished panels.
